Help Us Save Elder Eddie’s Home & TheLRoom From Gentrification!!
Ed Swan, affectionately known as Eddie, is a friend, ally and advocate. Eddie is known for over 50 years of mentoring entrepreneurs, fighting for women, LGBTQ and other national and international social justice causes.
The current owners of her home have decided to end Eddie’s lease. They offered to sell the home to her,
and Eddie wants to buy it. Eddie is raising the funds to buy the house so she can stay.
The community that has benefited greatly from Eddie’s contributions.
Many have met Eddie at the Durham farmers market, selling positive-image cultural items and organic healing beverages, especially the turmeric lemonade. Eddie has also founded TheLRoom, a space located in her home; where she does marketing consulting and where women identified people gather to de-stress, truth-tell, listen to visiting speakers, have workshops,
celebrate over meals and have deep conversations.
In TheLRoom, which has given comfort to hundreds of women, every room is curated with displays of women's art, black culture, and iconic historical moments. Anyone who has been to this thoughtful home knows how special it is and how important it is to preserve it. Following in the footsteps of a long line of entrepreneurs and changemakers in Durham and beyond, Eddie’s dream is to continue creating space for women in her home. However, Eddie needs support to make that possible.
In the most recent wave of gentrification across Durham, the housing market has gone up so much that many folks have had to leave to find more affordable options. Eddie is now faced with a life-changing decision.
Due to the lack of affordable housing, buying her current home is Eddie’s best option.
She needs community support to buy her home.
Eddie has become chosen family for a number of us over the years, and Durham NC is a better place with her here.
For many decades Eddie has made numerous contributions in the Durham community and nationwide,
donating countless hours and resources to important causes.
For 15 years she's been a member of the Durham Chapter of Southerners On New Ground (SONG), which initiated the Black Mama’s Bailout and End Money Bail campaigns. She’s also a member of Knarrative (Knubia), the Greater Durham Black Chamber of Commerce and donated to Katrina survivors, the Trayvon Martin Foundation (with whom she shares a Feb 5th birthday), the George Floyd Foundation and numerous other organizations.
During the height of COVID 19 TheLRoom was a no contact pickup location for free farm fresh vegetables and groceries.
Now is the time for us to take care of Eddie,
Let’s show Eddie some big love and gratitude by donating funds and spreading the word.
With love from Durham SONG (Southerners On New Ground)
