This workshop is centered on the belief that when writers leave behind the distractions of their busy lives to gather in an encouraging community, they are able to make important breakthroughs in their writing. In this session, Jaki Shelton Green will facilitate a fun and engaging day of craft discussion, writing prompts, writing time, sharing, and inspiration.
Whether you are lost, searching, or just in need of nurture, this workshop will provide a safe space where you can take risks steeped in the wisdom of poetry and story. You will leave with a renewed curiosity and appreciation for your creativity that will sustain your writing with energy and confidence.

Participants from the 2016 LRoom writing workshop facilitated by Jaki Shelton Green meets regularly to offer safe spaces for providing each other feed-back and support in addition to gathering socially.

Jaki Shelton Green, 2016 Lenoir-Rhyne University Writer-in-Residence and Duke University Center for Documentary Studies Residency. 2014 NC Literary Hall of Fame, 2014 Pushcart Prize Nominee, 2010 Fine Arts Emerald Award (Raleigh LINKS),
2009 NC Piedmont Laureate, 2007 Sam Ragan Award for Contributions to the Fine Arts of North Carolina.
2003 recipient of the North Carolina Award for Literature (the highest award the state can bestow for significant contributions in science, literature, fine arts, and public service) and inducted into the North Caroliniana Society.

Jaki Shelton Green lecturer, key note speaker and consultant for groups such as NC Humanities Council Roads Scholar Program, North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teachers, NC Writers Conference, Paul Green Foundation, UNC-Chapel Hill Law School. She has taught poetry and facilitated creative writing classes extensively at public libraries, universities and community colleges, public/private schools, and literary organizations such as the NC Writer’s Network, NC Poetry Society, Bates College Multicultural Studies Program, Salem College Women Writers Center, the Department of Cultural Resources for Brazil and the NC Turkish Association. As a creativity coach, she facilitates workshops and trainings throughout the U.S, Europe, the Caribbean Islands, Central and South America. In 2006 she was awarded a residency at The Taller Portobelo Artist Colony in historic Portobelo, Panama and addressed the Congress of Diaspora Conference at the University of Panama.
2013 featured commentator and creative advisor for GRITS Anthology (Girls Raised in the South) and final judge for the distinguished Lucille Clifton Poetry Award. Additionally, she judges poetry for schools, anthologies, and celebrated prizes such as the Julie Suk Poetry Award , NC Poetry Society, and The Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival.
As community arts advocate, Jaki Shelton Green creates and facilitates programs that serve diverse audiences and populations: incarcerated, homeless, chronically and mentally ill, survivors, elderly, public and private schools, teachers, hospice care providers, substance abuse counselors, literacy programs, libraries, universities, humanities councils, immigrants, community economic development, and social justice nonprofits.
Her poetry has been widely choreographed by numerous dance companies including Danca Nova at Colorado Naropa Institute for the Arts, The Chuck Davis African-American Dance Company at the Kennedy Center, Miami City Ballet, Two Near the Edge, Choreo Dance., and Murmurations Dance Company.
She is the owner of SistaWRITE providing retreats and travel excursions for women writers.
Works in progress include new poetry manuscripts, short stories, and a novel.
